Prometheus Medical International in collaboration with the College of Remote and Offshore Medicine Foundation (CoROM), is pleased to offer the Austere and prehospital ultrasound course — APUS — in Norway.

Austere and prehospital ultrasound course is a practical point-of-care ultrasound course designed for clinicians working in prehospital, remote, austere, tactical, maritime, expedition, and resource-limited environments. The course introduces participants to the use of focused diagnostic ultrasound as a decision-support tool when access to advanced imaging, hospital diagnostics, or specialist support may be limited.

The Austere and prehospital ultrasound course is suitable for doctors, paramedics, nurses, clinical medical officers, military medics, and other healthcare professionals who need to develop practical ultrasound skills for challenging clinical environments.

Course content

The Austere and prehospital ultrasound (APUS) course introduces the core principles of diagnostic ultrasound and its application in austere and prehospital care.
Topics include:

  • Ultrasound fundamentals, image orientation, depth, gain, and probe selection
  • eFAST and ultrasound in trauma assessment
  • Cardiac ultrasound and limited haemodynamic assessment
  • Pneumothorax and pleural effusion assessment
  • Renal and abdominal aorta assessment
  • Vascular access using ultrasound guidance
  • Ultrasound use in tropical, austere, and remote medicine
  • Orthopaedic ultrasound and selected advanced applications

Learning outcomes

After completing the Austere and prehospital ultrasound course, participants should be able to understand the basic physics of ultrasound, select the appropriate transducer for common bedside examinations, optimise basic ultrasound image settings, identify normal and selected pathological findings, and apply focused ultrasound as part of clinical decision-making in prehospital and resource-limited settings.
